American Teens Talk - Sol

What have you been doing this week? Well, this week I've been focusing on trying to get my extracurriculars started, because the year has just started, and I'm trying to study and get my grades up this year. What kind of extracurricular activities do you do? Oh, I've been doing speech and debate, and Battle of the Books, and soon Science Olympiad is going to get started and I'm going to be doing that. And in addition after school I also have a Jewish youth program that I do, and I help with the kids in Sunday school at Temple. I'm basically like a teacher's assistant. And what is Battle of the Books? Battle of the Books is a school club that is focused on a competition with a list of books that we get every year, and we compete on our knowledge of the books. What kind of books? Well, this year there are fifteen on the list, and I just started reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. And the list is mostly fiction but there is some nonfiction in there. And what is the Science Olympiad? Science Olympiad is a school club that is also geared to preparing towards a competition, but it's for a state science competition where we compete in partners on different science events. When I met Sol, I didn't realize that English is not her first language. She has learned English very well. Sol, 17 What do you hope to do after high school? After high school I really hope to get a degree in chemistry because that's what I'm really passionate about, and then probably go to medical school to focus on people and the brain, which I'm also really interested in, and I want to be a neurologist. Is there anything that you would like to say to kids in other countries? Uh, I don't know. I'm kind of a new English speaker. I've been here for six years so it's kind of surreal to talk to kids who are also learning English. What is your first language? My first language is Hebrew. I'm from Israel. How did you end up here? Well, my dad got a transfer from work, and we all thought it would be a really good experience, and I have loved it so far and so has my whole family. So, is there anything you would like to say to kids in other countries? Well, first of all, hi. And I guess a really good piece of advice is really go after what you love and work towards doing what you are passionate about.

Battle of the Books는 학교 동아리입니다. 매년 정해진 도서 목록을 받고 그 책들에 대한 지식을 겨루는 대회에 참가하는 활동입니다. 어떤 종류의 책들인가요? 올해는 목록에 열다섯 권의 책이 있습니다. 저는 Sylvia Plath의 The Bell Jar를 읽기 시작했습니다. 그 목록은 대부분 소설이지만 일부는 논픽션도 포함되어 있습니다. 그렇다면 Science Olympiad는 무엇인가요? Science Olympiad 역시 대회를 준비하기 위한 학교 동아리입니다. 하지만 이것은 주 단위 과학 경연대회를 위한 것으로, 우리는 짝을 이루어 다양한 과학 종목에서 경쟁합니다. 제가 Sol을 처음 만났을 때는 영어가 그녀의 모국어가 아니라는 사실을 몰랐습니다. 그녀는 영어를 정말 잘 배웠습니다. Sol, 17세 고등학교를 졸업한 후에는 무엇을 하고 싶나요? 고등학교를 졸업한 후에는 화학 학위를 받고 싶습니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 제가 정말 열정을 가지고 있는 분야이기 때문입니다. 그리고 아마 의과대학에 진학해서 사람과 뇌를 연구하고 싶습니다. 그 분야에도 정말 관심이 많습니다. 그리고 저는 신경과 의사가 되고 싶습니다. 다른 나라의 아이들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있나요? 음, 잘 모르겠습니다. 저는 아직 영어를 배운 지 오래되지 않은 영어 사용자입니다. 이곳에 온 지 6년이 되었기 때문에 영어를 배우고 있는 다른 나라의 아이들에게 이야기하는 것이 조금 신기하게 느껴집니다. 당신의 모국어는 무엇인가요? 제 모국어는 히브리어입니다. 저는 이스라엘 출신입니다. 어쩌다가 이곳에 오게 되었나요? 아버지께서 회사에서 전근을 받으셨습니다. 그리고 우리 모두에게 정말 좋은 경험이 될 것이라고 생각했습니다. 지금까지 저는 이곳 생활을 정말 좋아했고 제 가족도 모두 마찬가지입니다. 그렇다면 다른 나라의 아이들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있나요? 우선 안녕하세요. 그리고 제가 드릴 수 있는 좋은 조언은 자신이 사랑하는 것을 추구하고 자신이 열정을 가진 일을 향해 꾸준히 노력하라는 것입니다.
