What have you been doing this week?

We haven't been doing a lot at school because it is right before the break, so we don't do a lot. They try to squish in a lot of tests during the week before we get out so we can start a new unit after the break. So I had a math test and a science test. In orchestra we've been learning new notes, how to read them and how to do them on the instrument.

What instrument do you play?

I play the viola.

Is there anything else happening?

I have a guitar lesson this afternoon.

And Christmas is coming very soon. On Christmas most of my friends wake up in the morning and open presents, but my family doesn't traditionally celebrate Christmas. We don't have any Vietnamese holidays in this part of the year so we just celebrate Christmas for the fun of it. We don't open presents in the morning. We prepare food all day and then my family and friends come over, and we open presents at night and eat. We usually make Vietnamese food, and sometimes chicken wings too.

Have you been buying and making presents?

I usually make cards or homemade gifts, but this year I haven't had time. I had this test in language arts a couple weeks ago and I failed it. I got really upset, and I asked the teacher if I could have a retake. At first she said no, and I started crying because I knew my mom would get really upset, so the teacher let me take a re-take, so I have been studying. I got 100 on my re-take.

What do you study in language arts?

We learn parts of speech, grammar, and do presentations in class. Recently we made a parody of The Night Before Christmas and we presented it today.

Anything else?

My birthday is tomorrow, so I'm having friends over. We're going to have a sleepover. We'll go ice skating and then we'll go rent movies and we'll go back home and watch them.

Is there anything that you would like to say to kids in other countries?

Umm, let me think. You should work hard for your future because it will pay off.

이번 주에는 무엇을 하면서 지냈나요?

방학 직전이라 학교에서는 많은 것을 하지 않았어요. 방학이 시작되기 전에 시험을 많이 치르게 해서 방학 후에는 새로운 단원을 시작할 수 있게 해요. 그래서 저는 수학 시험과 과학 시험을 봤어요. 오케스트라에서는 새로운 음표를 배우고, 그것을 읽는 방법과 악기로 연주하는 방법을 배우고 있어요.

어떤 악기를 연주하나요?

저는 비올라를 연주해요.

또 다른 일이 있나요?

오늘 오후에는 기타 레슨이 있어요.

그리고 크리스마스가 곧 다가와요. 크리스마스가 되면 대부분의 친구들은 아침에 일어나 선물을 열어보지만, 우리 가족은 전통적으로 크리스마스를 기념하지 않아요. 이 시기에는 베트남 명절이 없어서 우리는 그냥 즐기기 위해 크리스마스를 기념해요. 우리는 아침에 선물을 열어보지 않아요. 하루 종일 음식을 준비한 뒤 가족과 친구들이 집에 오면, 밤에 선물을 열어보고 함께 식사를 해요. 우리는 보통 베트남 음식을 만들고, 가끔은 치킨 윙도 만들어요.

선물을 사거나 직접 만들고 있었나요?

저는 보통 카드나 손수 만든 선물을 만들지만, 올해는 시간이 없었어요. 몇 주 전에 국어 과목 시험을 봤는데 떨어졌어요. 저는 정말 속상해서 선생님께 재시험을 볼 수 있는지 여쭤봤어요. 처음에는 안 된다고 하셨지만, 엄마가 정말 속상해하실 걸 알았기 때문에 제가 울기 시작했고, 결국 선생님께서 재시험을 보게 해 주셔서 계속 공부했어요. 재시험에서는 100점을 받았어요.

국어 시간에는 무엇을 배우나요?

품사와 문법을 배우고, 수업 시간에 발표도 해요. 최근에는 크리스마스 전날 밤을 패러디해서 오늘 발표했어요.

또 다른 일이 있나요?

내일이 제 생일이라 친구들을 집에 초대할 거예요. 친구들과 함께 밤을 보내는 파자마 파티를 할 거예요. 스케이트를 타러 갔다가 영화를 빌린 뒤 집으로 돌아와 함께 볼 거예요.
