Day202 American Teens Talk - Jacob

Q: What have you been doing this week?

JACOB: I’ve been, sort of, preparing for finals, finishing up work, trying to balance the things I need to do with the things I should do.

JACOB: I need to do things like studying for a test now or getting in assignments that are past due, and I should do things like exercising or catching up on things that will help me up ahead, on tests in the future.

JACOB: I’ve been trying to work on a big English assignment and prepare for finals.

JACOB: I stayed up all night trying to finish, as well as preparing for a performance on the clarinet.

Q: Have you been doing anything else?

JACOB: I’ve been trying to get a basic draft of a book I want to write.

JACOB: I feel like the essays you write at school are constricting.

JACOB: This is writing I enjoy doing.

JACOB: It helps me relax and wind down.

Q: What do you want to do after high school?

JACOB: After high school I want to go to a university and get a doctorate in some kind of science.

JACOB: Right now I’m aiming for entomology, the study of insects, especially ants.

JACOB: That’s my passion.

JACOB: I’m really interested in the complex societies they form and how they work together.

JACOB: If you want to get me talking, ask me about ants.

JACOB: They have really complex and diverse societies.

JACOB: They are the most complex of all animal societies.

JACOB: It’s ants, not elephants or primates or monkeys, that are the closest to human societies.

JACOB: I know that when you were small, you had serious health problems.

JACOB: Your parents had to take you to the hospital really fast many times.

Q: Is that still true?

JACOB: I still have health issues.

JACOB: I have allergy-induced asthma.

JACOB: That means I have allergies that sometimes make it very difficult to breathe.

JACOB: It limits me from doing activities or going places sometimes.

JACOB: It’s just a part of my life.

JACOB: I live with it.

Q: Are you doing anything for Martin Luther King Day?

JACOB: I’m probably going to study with a friend because I have finals right away.

JACOB: We had a powerful assembly program at school.

JACOB: The African-American student community group gave a serious eye-opener on how bad it was at that time period.

JACOB: A lot of people were disturbed by it.

Q: Is there anything that you would like to say to kids in other countries?

JACOB: Hmm. In the end, we’re all human.

JACOB: It’s good to have an identity and celebrate your history, but in the end, we’re all human.

Q: 이번 주에는 무엇을 하며 지냈나요?

JACOB: 기말고사를 준비하고, 밀린 일을 마무리하면서, 해야만 하는 일과 해두면 좋은 일 사이에서 균형을 맞추려고 노력하며 지냈어요.

JACOB: 지금 당장 시험공부를 하거나 제출 기한이 지난 과제를 내는 것 같은 일은 꼭 해야 하고, 운동을 하거나 앞으로 있을 시험에 도움이 될 공부를 따라잡는 것 같은 일도 해두면 좋죠.

JACOB: 큰 영어 과제를 하고 기말고사를 준비하려고 계속 노력하고 있어요.

JACOB: 과제를 끝내려고 밤을 꼬박 새웠고, 클라리넷 연주도 준비했어요.

Q: 그 밖에 또 하고 있는 일이 있나요?

JACOB: 제가 쓰고 싶은 책의 기본 초안을 만들려고 하고 있어요.

JACOB: 학교에서 쓰는 에세이는 제약이 많다고 느껴요.

JACOB: 이건 제가 즐겨 하는 글쓰기예요.

JACOB: 이렇게 글을 쓰면 긴장이 풀리고 마음이 편안해져요.

Q: 고등학교를 졸업한 후에는 무엇을 하고 싶나요?

JACOB: 고등학교를 졸업한 후에는 대학에 진학해서 어떤 과학 분야에서 박사 학위를 받고 싶어요.

JACOB: 지금은 곤충을 연구하는 곤충학, 특히 개미 연구를 목표로 하고 있어요.

JACOB: 그게 제가 정말 열정을 가지고 있는 분야예요.

JACOB: 개미들이 형성하는 복잡한 사회와 서로 협력하는 방식에 정말 관심이 많아요.

JACOB: 제가 신나게 이야기하는 걸 보고 싶다면 개미에 관해 물어보세요.

JACOB: 개미들은 정말 복잡하고 다양한 사회를 이루고 있어요.

JACOB: 모든 동물 사회 가운데 가장 복잡한 사회를 이루고 있죠.

JACOB: 인간 사회와 가장 가까운 것은 코끼리나 영장류, 원숭이가 아니라 바로 개미 사회예요.

JACOB: 어렸을 때 심각한 건강 문제가 있었다고 알고 있어요.

JACOB: 부모님께서 여러 번 급히 병원에 데려가야 했었죠.

Q: 지금도 그런가요?

JACOB: 지금도 건강 문제가 있어요.

JACOB: 저는 알레르기 유발성 천식이 있어요.

JACOB: 알레르기 때문에 때때로 숨쉬기가 매우 어려워진다는 뜻이에요.

JACOB: 그 때문에 가끔은 어떤 활동을 하거나 어떤 곳에 가는 데 제약을 받아요.

JACOB: 그건 그냥 제 삶의 일부예요.

JACOB: 그걸 받아들이며 살아가고 있어요.

Q: 마틴 루터 킹 데이에 특별히 할 일이 있나요?

JACOB: 곧바로 기말고사가 있어서 아마 친구와 함께 공부할 것 같아요.

JACOB: 학교에서 아주 인상적인 전체 학생 집회 프로그램이 있었어요.

JACOB: 아프리카계 미국인 학생 모임에서 당시 상황이 얼마나 심각했는지를 깨닫게 해주는 강렬한 내용을 보여주었어요.

JACOB: 많은 사람들이 그것을 보고 큰 충격을 받았어요.

Q: 다른 나라의 아이들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있나요?

JACOB: 음. 결국 우리는 모두 같은 인간이에요.

JACOB: 자신의 정체성을 갖고 자신의 역사를 기리는 것은 좋은 일이지만, 결국 우리는 모두 같은 인간이에요.
