Day208 American Teens Talk - Kyle

Q: What have you been doing this week?

KYLE: Well, in school we’re having a lot of new math and stuff, and we took a couple of tests this week also.

Q: What’s happening outside of school?

KYLE: Baseball is about to start and I’m really ready for that. I’m in a PONY League and it’s recreational. It’s not a very big league. What you do is your parents sign you up and pay a little money for you to play, and it doesn’t cost very much.

KYLE: Basketball season just ended, and I was playing that. There are a lot of other teams in that league. And my birthday is in four days and I’ll be fourteen.

Q: How will you celebrate?

KYLE: Oh I don’t know. I’ll probably go play laser tag or something.

Q: I think your parents are divorced. Is that right?

KYLE: Yeah. I live with my mom normally, and every Thursday I go to my dad’s for the evening, from 6:00 to 9:00. Every other weekend I go to my dad’s house and stay from Friday to Sunday, and then I go back to my mom’s.

Q: What are you looking forward to?

KYLE: Baseball. And I’m kind of excited to go into high school this fall. I’m probably going to take a class called Scientific Visualization and Graphics. It’s really cool. You can learn how to make video games and stuff.

Q: Will you do anything special this summer?

KYLE: Probably go on a couple of camping trips with my family, my mom’s family most of the time. We like camping a lot. At the end of the school year we have a camping trip where there is a thirteen-mile trail down the mountain. We camp for like three days and then go hike down the trail. It’s pretty cool.

Q: Do you know what you’d like to do after high school?

KYLE: Not really. I have a faint idea. I’d like to go into science or engineering. We did a career finder thing on the computer at school, and it suggested science or engineering for me. The first four careers were all kinds of engineering. The fourth was nuclear engineering.

Q: Right.

KYLE: As if I’m going to handle nuclear bombs or something.

Q: Is there anything you’d like to say to kids in other countries?

KYLE: Just “Hi,” I guess.

Q: 이번 주에는 뭘 하면서 지냈니?

KYLE: 음, 학교에서는 새로운 수학 내용 같은 걸 많이 배우고 있고, 이번 주에 시험도 두어 번 봤어요.

Q: 학교 밖에서는 어떻게 지내고 있니?

KYLE: 야구 시즌이 곧 시작하는데, 정말 기대하고 있어요. 저는 PONY League에 참가하고 있는데, 취미로 즐기는 리그예요. 그렇게 큰 리그는 아니에요. 부모님이 등록해 주시고 참가비를 조금 내면 경기에 참여할 수 있는데, 비용이 많이 들지는 않아요.

KYLE: 농구 시즌은 막 끝났는데, 저도 농구를 하고 있었어요. 그 리그에는 다른 팀들도 많이 있어요. 그리고 나흘 후가 제 생일인데, 열네 살이 돼요.

Q: 생일은 어떻게 보낼 거니?

KYLE: 글쎄요, 잘 모르겠어요. 아마 레이저 태그를 하러 가거나 뭐 그런 걸 할 것 같아요.

Q: 부모님이 이혼하신 것으로 알고 있는데, 맞니?

KYLE: 네. 평소에는 엄마와 함께 살고, 매주 목요일 저녁 6시부터 9시까지 아빠 댁에 가요. 격주 주말에는 아빠 댁에 가서 금요일부터 일요일까지 지낸 다음 다시 엄마 집으로 돌아와요.

Q: 무엇을 기대하고 있니?

KYLE: 야구요. 그리고 이번 가을에 고등학교에 들어가는 것도 좀 기대돼요. 아마 Scientific Visualization and Graphics라는 수업을 들을 것 같아요. 정말 멋진 수업이에요. 비디오 게임 만드는 법 같은 걸 배울 수 있어요.

Q: 이번 여름에 특별히 할 일이 있니?

KYLE: 아마 가족과 캠핑을 두어 번 갈 것 같아요. 대부분 엄마 쪽 가족과 함께 가요. 저희는 캠핑을 정말 좋아해요. 학년 말에는 캠핑 여행을 가는데, 산 아래로 이어지는 13마일짜리 트레일이 있어요. 한 3일 정도 캠핑한 다음 그 트레일을 따라 하이킹을 해요. 꽤 멋져요.

Q: 고등학교를 졸업한 후에 무엇을 하고 싶은지 알고 있니?

KYLE: 아직 확실히는 모르겠어요. 막연하게 생각하고 있는 건 있어요. 과학이나 공학 분야로 진로를 정하고 싶어요. 학교에서 컴퓨터로 진로 적성 같은 것을 알아봤는데, 저에게 과학이나 공학 분야를 추천했어요. 처음 네 개의 추천 직업이 모두 여러 종류의 공학 분야였어요. 네 번째는 원자력공학이었어요.

Q: 그렇군.

KYLE: 제가 무슨 핵폭탄 같은 걸 다루기라도 할 것처럼요.

Q: 다른 나라의 아이들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있니?

KYLE: 그냥 “안녕”이라고 할 것 같아요.
